The fonds consists of field notes, reports, descriptions and certificates relating to surveys conducted by John Reid. The areas surveyed included Cavan Township, Monaghan Township, Smith Township and Otonabee Township which are in the County of Peterborough. There are also some records pertaining to John Reid's service in the militia.

This item is the last will and testament of Henry Vansittart dated October 22, 1836. The land bequeathed in the will includes property in Blandford Township, Bexley Township, East Oxford Township and lands on Lake Simcoe.

This item is a pencil sketch of the Otonabee River and the District of Newcastle where the village of Peterborough was located. The sketch was produced by "K.E.S."

This fonds consists of a retail day book of the Aikenhead Hardware Company for July 10, 1835 to September 5, 1839, with the currency being recorded in pounds, shillings and pence. The fonds also contains wholesale price lists of the Aikenhead Company from 1895 to 1899; a commemorative booklet of the company for its 100th year and a nine-page history of the company. The Aikenhead Hardware Company was established in Toronto in 1830 and played a very significant role, in providing to early settlers, tools and equipment to build their homes and businesses.

This document is a contract covering the sale of a lot in the Township of Zorra to Robert McKay, signed by Peter Robinson and dated 18 August 1835.

This fonds consists of the personal and business records of the Geale, Hamilton, Peck, Barker and Rogers families. There are letters relating to World War I written by Beresford and Robert Hamilton and Heber and Harry Rogers; letters, diaries, journals of Richard Birdsall Rogers (superintending engineer of the Peterborough Lift Lock); the records of Hon. Robert Hamilton, a factor at the Hudson's Bay Company stationed at Fort Edmonton. The fonds also contains stereographs, approximately 1000 photographs, and a C.E. Goad fire insurance plan for the city of Peterborough, 1882. Items of interest include a group of photographs of the Trent Valley area and the building of the canal; Rogers family pictures of the Stoney Lake area and the Juniper Island Regatta; photos of early aircraft and the Curtiss Aviation School; photos of hydraulic lift lock at Peterborough; and one letter from Catharine Parr Traill to Robert Miles Hamilton.

This collection of family papers, correspondence, journals, photographs, newspaper clippings and published works spans the years 1834 to 1966 and measures approximately 3 1/2 linear metres. The papers were deposited in Trent University Archives through the courtesy of members of the Geale and Rogers families in 1983.

The papers are divided into two series:

Series A, the Geale family papers, consists of records pertaining to the descendants of the Hon. Robert Hamilton, a factor of the Hudson's Bay Company stationed at Fort Edmonton in northern Manitoba. Robert Hamilton married Annie Seabourne. One of their sons was Robert Miles Hamilton (1864-1939). He married Alice May Barker and resided at "Auburn" in Peterborough, Ontario. Their children were Miles Beresford Hamilton, Robert Barker Hamilton, (Alice) Seabourne Hamilton, and S.R. Hamilton (son). Alice Seabourne Hamilton married Charles Norman Geale. Papers of the Barker family (the Hon. Samuel Barker was Mrs. Robert Miles Hamilton's father) are included in this series as are the papers of the Peck family. Edward Armour Peck was the natural son of Arthur Henry Peck and the adoptive father of Charles Norman Geale. He married Kitty Revell. Both Miles Beresford Hamilton and Robert Barker Hamilton served overseas in the First World War and their correspondence is included in this series.

Series B of this collection consists of the Rogers Papers. Richard Birdsall Rogers was born at Ashburnham in 1857. He lived there until 1916 and then moved to "Beechwood Farm" in Douro Township. He was a land surveyor and was appointed superintendent engineer of the Trent Valley Canal in 1884. Richard married Clara Mina Calcutt of Peterborough in 1881. They had seven children. One daughter, Leah, married Herbert Geale, brother of Charles Norman Geale. Two sons, Heber and Harry served overseas in World War I. Their correspondence is included. R.B. Rogers designed and supervised the building of the hydraulic lift locks at Peterborough and Kirkfield. These papers included several files of plans and specifications for the locks, correspondence and documents accrued during the scandal preceding Rogers' resignation in 1906, the Holgate Report which condemned Rogers and the Keefer investigation which completely vindicated his work as Chief Engineer. This fonds consists of 575 bound volumes of Victoria County administrative and financial records and court records. It includes 228 local business journals, day books, ledgers, County council material, criminal justice accounts and court documents.

This item is a privately published book inscribed to "my dear friend Mrs. Traill" from "George W. Bridges, Beachly Parsonage June 18, 1862." The book tells of the desertion of Mr. Bridges' wife and the drowning of their daughters in an accident near Jamaica and his efforts to effect a reconciliation.

The fonds consists of two documents: 1) R.B. Rogers' (superintending engineer) covering report on the proposed Trent Canal from Port Hope to Rice Lake, 8 pages, January 31, 1900. 2) The supporting, or investigated, document submitted by Robt. A. Maingy (mining and civil engineer) to Lt. Gov. Sir John Colborne on the same topic on March 6, 1833, 8 pages. Roger's report was submitted to Collingwood Scheiber, Chief Engineer of the Department of Railways and Canals.

This item is carbon copy of a typescript history of St. Andrew's United Church titled "One Hundred Years' History of St. Andrew's Church, Peterborough 1833-1933." It was written and later published by E. Bruce Fowler.

This fonds consists of bound volumes of births, marriages and deaths for the United Counties of Northumberland and Durham and loose marriage documents. Fonds is organized into two series: loose documents and bound volumes.

This item is a photocopy of a lumber notebook of agreements with various people giving permission to cut timber on lots held in various townships (by Richard Birdsall for Canada Company). There is also a listing of lots held by the Canada Company in 40 or more townships and a listing of prices of various woods and staves. There are entries at both ends of the notebook dating from 1831 to 1832.

This fonds consists of records from the law firm and practice of Hall, Gillespie, from its beginnings with Robert Dennistoun, to its termination with John Gillespie. This fonds consists of land search books, case files, estate records from probates of wills and succession of duty papers to surety bonds, and lists of assets and debts. It also consists of correspondence, the firm's written history, maps, deeds and associated papers, mortgages, debentures, bills of sale and other legal records. The records in this fonds deal primarily with people and places in the City and County of Peterborough as well as its surrounding area.

Fonds consists of the wills of W.T.C. Boyd and Ida Lillian Boyd, with attached deed of Laurence Chadwick Boyd. Also included are several Boyd family photographs and one portrait. One of the albums has a photograph of Anne Langton, pioneer artist and teacher who settled in the Sturgeon Lake area, and whose journals have been published.

Collection consists of miscellaneous photographs, engravings, posters, broadsides, and a newspaper supplement.

This item is a petition of freeholders of Emily Township to John Huston, Surveyor of Highways, paying for alterations in roads, especially along the Emily/Ennismore boundary.

Fonds consists of two hand-sewn booklets, each with five original architectural drawings of the "Hamilton District of Newcastle" gaol and court house. Each sheet has a title depicting the section of the building drawn, i.e., "Ground plan of a court house and gaol to be built at Hamilton district of Newcastle as proposed by Archibald Fraser." All sheets are signed by Archibald Fraser and are undated. Some of the sheets are coloured.

This fonds consists of records relating to the Bateson family of Cavan Township in the County of Durham. A large portion of the records are debentures showing sale of land to William Bateson and other people. There are three wills; one for Isaac Bateson, one for Ellen Bateson (parents of William Bateson) and one for William Bateson. The fonds also includes some earlier, apparently unrelated records regarding other properties. This fonds is an excellent source of history on the Bateson family.
