This fonds consists of primary research material and the manuscript and photographs for Harley R. Cummings' book, "Early Days in Haliburton". The fonds also consists of correspondence, including letters from the Honorable Leslie Frost, photographs, maps, and an original 1863 surveyor's diary for Eyre Township. Also included are the C.R. Stewart diaries, dated 1902-1904. C.R. Stewart (1826-1905) was resident agent for the Canadian Land and Immigration Company and was the first settler in the Village of Haliburton. In his diaries he refers to Colonel Samuel Hughes and Mossom Boyd. Stewart's son, C.E. Stewart (1851-1921) was editor of the "Bobcaygeon Independent". The fonds also includes several historical papers and publications written by Cummings and others.

Choate, Thomas Harold KenyonFonds consists of maps and plans of the Ottawa and Haliburton areas, time-books of Bronsons and Weston logging firm, and photographs of the building of a railway, and of the Haliburton area. Included also are research material and manuscripts relating to books which Harley R. Cummings wrote about schools in the Ottawa area, and on the history of Haliburton. Included are notes on John Strachan and a transcript of his diary. The fonds also includes several genealogical charts of the MacCallum family.
Cummings, Harley R.Fonds consists of 27 diaries of William Thornton Cust Boyd dated 1878 through 1917. Five of the diaries, 1884-1888, include financial records. The diaries recount the private and public life of Boyd, and include references to his wife, Meta, and their children, and social activities with family and friends including boating excursions and picnics. He refers throughout to Richard Birdsall Rogers (1857-1927), superintending engineer of the Peterborough Lift Lock, in social and business terms, and the two often conduct business relating to the Trent Valley Canal. Activities which Boyd participated in regularly include yachting and boating (on the "Calumet", "Ogemah", and "Ajax"), curling, hunting, gardening, tree planting, playing cards, skating, canoeing, and attending the theatre. He recounts details of the illnesses, deaths and funerals of acquaintances and family members, including his step-brother, Mossom (Mossie) Martin Boyd. Boyd recounts in detail the building of his house by John E. Belcher ([184-]-1915), architect, civil engineer, and surveyor. This house is now operated as Case Manor Nursing Home. The diaries speak of local and federal politics, World War I, and the activities of the church. They also detail the activities of the Lindsay, Bobcaygeon and Pontypool Railway Company, the Trent Valley Navigation Steamship Company, and the day-to-day operation of the family lumbering and cattle/buffalo enterprises.
Boyd, W.T.C.Fonds is a photocopy of a communication written to James F. Dennistoun, President of the Auburn Woollen Mills, dated September 6, 1882. It was written by the employees of the company who welcome Dennistoun back after a period away due to illness. They also express sincere thanks for the kindness and courtesy which he has always shown them. Among those who signed the letter is James Kendry, manager of the company.

Raper, who died in Township of Cavan, 18 August 1895; and the fourth, of Maria Richardson, wife of John Richardson, who died in Toronto, 28 November 1898, funeral at the residence of her brother, Wm. Notes inside the cover indicate that Caldwell purchased Lots 16 & 17, 13th Concession, Chandos Township, Peterborough County, on 26 November 1872. Caldwell notes the dates he planted his garden and the varieties of vegetables planted.
Caldwell, HughFonds consists of one ledger identified as having belonged to Moscrip, Allan & Company. The business sold hardware, machinery, and farm equipment, and repaired same. Some customers were contractors, blacksmiths, wagoners; addresses of customers were Hamilton Township, Cobourg, Oshawa, Peterborough, Port Hope, and Bowmanville. Some business was carried on with schooners. Other customers included Dr. Gilchrist; Thomas Trail [Traill]; Cobourg-Peterborough Distillery; Ontario Distillery; Cobourg, Peterborough & Marmora Railway and Mining Co.; R.A. Waddell, Sheriff; and merchants and farmers. Accounts for 1867 listed Trustees of Common Schools with charges for two school bells. The ledger includes an index.
Moscrip, Allan & CompanyCollection consists of a guide to nearly all of the Frances Stewart letters located at Trent University Archives and elsewhere. The guide is a biographical reference tool which indexes all the names which appear in the letters. The indexing locates each name in the approximately 450 letters and gives the corresponding page number in the transcripts (94-006); it provides the source of biographic information, and explains the relationship of each person to Thomas Alexander Stewart and Frances Browne Stewart. The guide is arranged alphabetically by last name and includes hundreds of names, i.e., Sydney Bellingham, Rev. George Brabazon, Rev. Francis Browne, John Burnham, Rev. The volumes are numbered I through XII. Volume XII includes the following bibliographic information: "The Plays of William Shakespeare, from the correct edition of Isaac Reed, Esq., London, Printed for Vernor, Hood and Sharpe, Poultry; and Taylor and Hessey, Fleet Street. 1809." On the final page of each volume, except for Volumes I and II, the following additional information appears: "Stereotyped and printed by A. Wilson, Duke Street, Lincoln's-Inn Fields, London." On the final page of Vol. I, the following information appears: "Stereotyped by Andrew Wilson." Vol. I has the following additional names hand-written on the bookplate: "George A. Stewart", "Louis B. Stewart", and "[B] [ ] Stewart". Volumes III, VI, and VIII have "George A. Stewart" added to the bookplate. Handwritten on the bookplate for Vol. IV is "Thos. A. Stewart"; this may be Stewart's signature.

Royal Navy, London, England," and a stamped credit "Brown 163 High Holborn London" are found on the reverse. The other is a portrait by F.W. Lock, 1845, of an unidentified male with last name Rubidge, believed to be a son of Charles Rubidge.

Materials relate, for the most part, to the Bell and Canniff families of Thurlow Township, Hastings County. Other items of note include a document certifying parents' satisfaction with teacher Robert Laing, Big Island, 1817; a document relating to the building of a bridge across a creek in Thurlow Township, 1832; a notice regarding a meeting to elect officers for the formation of an agricultural society in Hastings County [Midland District Agricultural Society], 1830; and a declaration regarding Stephen Ferguson Bell who saw "a greate shooting of the stars... a continual shooting from the center of the Heavens in every direction," 1833.
Hastings CountyItem is a photocopy of a 36-page unpublished typescript of the letters of Joseph Carrothers (1793-1870) and his brother Nathaniel (ca.1796-1881). The letters are dated 1839-1870 and were sent from London, Upper Canada to their father, William, in Enniskillen, Ireland.
The Irish emigrants' letters were posted mostly from Westminster, near London, Ontario, during the years 1839 to 1870. They were duplicated and bound by Edward Norman Carrothers of Belfast, Northern Ireland, for friends and relatives in Canada and Ireland. The authors of the letters, Joseph Carrothers (1793-1870) and Nathaniel Carrothers (ca.1796-1881), were brothers of Edward Norman Carrothers' grandfather, and the recipient of the letters was their father, William. The two brothers were born at Farnagh, Ireland. Nathaniel emigrated to Canada in [1835], and Joseph in 1847.
