This collection consists of eighteen prize lists from agricultural fairs in Ontario including the Canadian National Exhibition, the Ontario Provincial Winter Fair, the Central Canada Exhibition in Ottawa, the Western Fair in London, Ontario; the Dominion Exposition in Regina, Saskatchewan; the Canadian Industrial Exhibition in Winnipeg, Manitoba; the Central Exhibition in Cobourg, Ontario and various small town agricultural societies lists.

Agricultural fair prize lists were produced in advance of the fair in order to attract people to compete in various categories. The categories consisted of a number of different elements that were part of agricultural life for a number of people. For instance categories included entries of the best cow or calf, horse showmanship, poultry, pig and sheep breeds. Produce competitions ranged from wheat, barley, rye, corn and oats to homemade pickles, jams and jellies. There were usually floral arrangement and best vegetable arrangement competitions. Ladies would often be able to enter competitions involving sewing and handywork. The prize lists always had advertisers and a list of contributors to the prizes. The book was divided into sections so that each competitor could find the competitions he/she desired to enter, a list of the categories and a small description of who could enter as well as the prizes to be awarded. The cover of the book listed when the fair was to take place and inside there was a list of fair organizers and contestant rules, dates and deadlines.

This fonds consists of diaries written by W.J. Standen concerning life on his farm near Barrie, Ontario. The fonds also contains a photocopy of the Standen family history, a portrait of Standen and a portrait of Standen with his family.

This fonds consists of two account books containing accounts from the Port Hope and Hope Township area.

Mild tanning around the edges, slight chipping at the spine head & tail, else very good plus copy in the original wrappers. This fonds consists of 24 Canadian art catalogues including catalogues of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and its' reports, constitution and by-laws. These materials were apparently from the home of Marmaduke Matthews, Wychwood Park, Toronto.

This fonds consists of correspondence and 75 shares in the Peterborough Gas Company; correspondence from the Ontario Bank and by-law no. 8 from the Ontario Ladies' College at Whitby, Ontario.

This item is the marriage license of Thomas Snarr and Anna Webster of Hastings and East Whitby, Ontario.

This item is a ledger of accounts which was kept by Dr. J.W. Clemishaw of Port Hope, Ontario. The entries are by the name of the patient and includes yearly summaries of accounts. There is little description of the nature of the illnesses.

This addition to the fonds consists of records such as births, marriages, deaths and school records of Flora Morrison's family who resided in Carrying Place.

Fonds is comprised of correspondence, newspaper clippings, articles and photographs pertaining to Leslie M. Frost (1895-1973), Gertrude Frost (1894-1970), Cecil Frost (1897-1947), Robert John “Jack” Beal (1919-1994) and Eileen Beal, Robert “Bob” Beal and other family members; also included are documents related to the family’s ‘Pleasant Point Cottage’.

Original Wrappers. Octavo (24.5 cm x 16.5 cm), pp. 142. Large colour fold-out (47.5 cm x 64.5 cm) "Map of the Prairie Region, 5th April, 1879" at rear. Sewn and gutta percha binding, printed, salmon-coloured paper wrappers. Slightly soiled, chipping along the spinestrip with some loss, gutta percha dry and brittle, the sewing however, is quite tight, else very good copy. Lowther 556. [1695]

(21.4 cm x 14.7 cm), Grey printed wraps, title-page reproduced in frame to front cover. 56 pp. + 11 publ. adverts (including rear cover), 1 map; Contemporary light pencil signature of A[lexander] Kirkwood [1823-1901] at head of upper cover. Kirkwood, farmer, author and civil servant, wrote many articles and treatises which eventually earned him a position with the Ontario Crown Lands Department where he became a senior officer. Kirkwood’s most significant work as a government promoter of agricultural expansion was an officially sanctioned book entitled The undeveloped lands in northern & western Ontario . . . (1878), written with his colleague Joseph J. Murphy. He is remembered largely for the prominent role he played in the establishment of Ontario’s first and most famous provincial park, Algonquin Park.
