Chatelain's map of North America was published to promote the interests of the Compagnie Francoise Occident, a trading company established to encourage the development of the Louisiana territory and as a consequence of its development, the stabilization of a lagging French economy. The map illustrates the relationship among the French, English and Spanish claims on the continent.

The whole being regulated by astronl. observations by Eman. Bowen. London. "We think it proper to inform ye curious reader that in laying down ye coast & boundaries of ye British Empire in America, as well as that of Louisiana, Canda or New France, recourse has been had to all ye surveys & most authentick charts & maps hitherto published, but more particularly to Monsr. Bellin's maps of Canada, Louisiana & drawn by him for ye use of P. Charlevoix's History of New France; and as our maps of these parts differ considerably from most others, this difference must be principally attributed to our relying on Monsr. Bellin's authority." This 73-page typewritten manuscript is an anecdotal record of the information McBain amassed about the properties in northeast Cavan Township. It includes a record of the hamlet of Springville west of the Cavan-Monaghan boundary and of Fairmount (formerly Morrow), a crossroads on the 12th Line, and references to Ida and Mount Pleasant on the middle road. There are in-depth references to properties and families on the 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th lines east of the middle road to the Monaghan boundary.
