One of earlier printed maps of Canada and the first one ever to use "Montreal" as a name, printed here as "Monte Real". Illustrations show the Indian village and stockade and the Indians meeting the French. Printed at top left corner: "446"; top right corner: "447". Sanson, geographe ordinaire du Roy. A Paris, chez H. Jaillot, joignant les grands Augustins aux deux globes, 1674. Coloured in outline. Large title cartouche and cartouche of scales both uncoloured. Copy of the first edition only a few copies of which are recorded. California is copied from Sanson's 1656 map. The remainder of the map is based on Sanson's 1669 Map. Omits Montreal. A highly decorative piece consisting of a circular map 17 in. in diameter of the Arctic set within a rectangle 19 x 17 in. with its remaining portions filled with remarkable coloured vignettes of whaling scenes in the northern regions. The Arctic is shown in its standard form for this period ... with Northwest America absent due to lack of available knowledge.

Has two coloured illustrations: one of a family in Eskimo dress and the other of fishermen harpooning a whale. Inset map at top right is of Nova Zembla [Zembia?] Has note: In the Philosophical Transactions of ao. 1674, no. 101, there is set down a description of Nova Zembla as it was sent to the Royal Society from a Russian merchant and discovered by order of the Grand Czaar, but there being not joyned to it either longitude latitude or other measure, we thought it better to follow the two newest maps. One printed at Amsterdam 1678 the other at Nuremberg 1679 and to place this by itself which shews it not an island but joyned with the continent at the letter K." Map dedicated to the Right Honble. Chatelain's map of North America was published to promote the interests of the Compagnie Francoise Occident, a trading company established to encourage the development of the Louisiana territory and as a consequence of its development, the stabilization of a lagging French economy. The map illustrates the relationship among the French, English and Spanish claims on the continent.

"We think it proper to inform ye curious reader that in laying down ye coast & boundaries of ye British Empire in America, as well as that of Louisiana, Canda or New France, recourse has been had to all ye surveys & most authentick charts & maps hitherto published, but more particularly to Monsr. Bellin's maps of Canada, Louisiana & drawn by him for ye use of P. Charlevoix's History of New France; and as our maps of these parts differ considerably from most others, this difference must be principally attributed to our relying on Monsr. Bellin's authority."
