The Department of Philosophy has been in operation since the University opened in 1964.
Custodial history
The material in accession 80-023 was created by and in the custody of Professor James MacAdam, Department of Philosophy, Trent University and Chairman of the 1978 Rousseau Congress, before it was donated to the Trent University Archives.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of records created and accumulated by Trent University's Department of Philosophy. Most of the material relates to the Rousseau Congress of 1978. Rousseau Bicentennial Congress took place at Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario in June 1978, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of noted French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau's death. The Congress was put on by the Philosophy Department of Trent University in conjunction with the Canadian Philosophical Association. It was a bilingual event and many Rousseau experts and enthusiasts were invited from around the world (France, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Canada, and the United States) to present papers on Rousseau. The fonds covers the years 1977-1978.
