Photo book: Right to belong

File consists of a self-published book of photographs called "Right to Belong" that documents a gathering at Trent University from February 28 - March 2, 2019. As the first page states, "In 1970, Jeannette Corbiere Lavell and David Lavell began a challenge against the Canadian Government in a landmark case that would eventually reach the Supreme Court. The fight to end gender discrimination in the Indian Act would ultimately last decades and involve many Indigenous leaders, supporters and allies. An historic gathering, hosted at Trent University (Nogojiwanong/Peterborough, Ontario), brought together key leaders and their allies to tell their stories of this struggle. The Right to Belong research gathering and the Right to Belong Indigenous Women's Symposium were held on February 28th, March 1, and March 2, 2019. This collection of photographs was created to remember these events.

The photographs were taken by Mr. William Martyn who lives on Alexander Ave. in Peterborough, Ontario, next to the hospital. Over the years, whatever the weather, Mr. Martyn produced a complete chronicle of the building/demolition process. Many hours too, were spent arranging and compiling the photographs on the disks into a comprehensive slide show.

Item is a modern reproduction of a photograph of Bill Batten leading a parade in front of Hendren’s Funeral Home in Lakefield to deliver Massey equipment. Photograph is accompanied by a note that reads “Bill Batten was the Massey Harris agent for the county of Peterborough.....his nickname was ‘Massey....’”. Also in file, a letter from the Newcastle Village and District Historical Society and a handwritten explanation of Bill Massey Batten.

This fonds consists of three notebooks of typewritten notes entitled "Reference Notes on the Cree", and one photograph of P.G. Downes with Richard Finnie. The notebooks contain bibliographic sources, alphabetically arranged, their contents briefly analyzed and evaluated in terms of their usefulness to the study of various facets of Cree society. The notebooks also contain a number of Prentice G. Downes' writings.

Fonds consists of a folder of 12 sheets of photographs which show the effects of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan in 1945. The 14 photographs are of individuals, and of the landscape of the area. The photographs were issued with the purpose of "calling for the issuance of a bill to protect atomic bomb survivors and calling for a total ban of atomic weapons". (Taken from the folder which encloses the photographs.) The text on the folder and the photographs is written in Japanese.

Reid family photographs

This accession consists of copy photographs, several of which are of originals in the Reid family photograph album and date from the 1840's to 1900's. One is of the Robert Henry "Harry" Devinish Reid family accompanied by an identification sheet with vital statistics for each member. Included also is a set of ten copy photographs of three generations of the Reid family. This set is accompanied by a family chart providing statistics for those listed.

This black and white photograph is of a man in clerical dress and is by the Roy Studio of Peterborough. On the reverse, the name "E.H.D. Hall" (a Peterborough lawyer associated with the firm of Hall, Gillespie) is written in pencil. The subject of the photograph is identified in pencil on the reverse as "Rev. Herbert Simonds [sic] ". Symonds married Emma Boyd, daughter of Mossom Boyd. They had several children including one son, Herbert Boyd Symonds (Boydie). He was killed in W.W.1.

This fonds consists of two watercolours with one identified as Hastings, Ontario, and and the other identified as Forest City. Also included in the fonds are two pencil sketches and a photograph of another sketch. One sketch of two farms and a river with a steamboat on it, but otherwise unidentified. The other sketch is of the Anderson house, the Ashfield house, Mr. Harry Fowld's house and the Wanamaker's house, all in Hastings, Ontario. The photographic reproduction is of a sketch entitled Hastings on the Trent, Ontario. The watercolours and sketches were created by Rev. Michael A. Farrar.

Joblin's interest in Indigenous affairs and in particular, the education of Indigenous peoples in Canada. Included in the fonds are references to the Canadian Association in Support of Native Peoples, the Indian-Eskimo Association, copies of Indian News and a Cree hymn book. Also included in the fonds are 14 scrapbooks of clippings on native issues.
