General note

This index consists of two alphabetical listings:

  1. by locatee (name of individual)
  2. by township or town

The listings give researchers a fast and efficient means to search land records in the Archives of Ontario, trace initial land grants, and exploit a valuable source of data reflecting the patterns of Ontario settlement.

The information is derived from three groups of records:
a) Crown Land Papers (R.C. 1)
b) Canada Company Papers (C.C.), also available at Trent (Archives microfilm set #17, accession 76-038)
c) Peter Robinson Papers (Ontario Archives microfilm MS-12)

Each entry provides the following information, if available, from the original source:

  1. name of locatee
  2. residence
  3. location of land
  4. date of transaction
  5. type of transaction (Order-in-Council, location, sale or lease, etc.)
  6. Ontario Archives' reference to original source (R.C. 1, C.C. etc.)

This index refers only to the original alienation of land from the Crown, resulting in a deed or patent. The Index to Land Patents, which is available only at the Ontario Archives, is not incorporated into this system, and must be used separately. As well, any conveyances of land after issue of patent are registered in local Land Registry Offices, and must be consulted there. This usually requires payment of a fee.

The Land Records Index contains data ranging from the 1780's to the beginning of World War I, from the grants of the United Empire Loyalists to those for veterans of the South African War. Only a few entries of sales of Clergy Reserves and Canada Company lands go beyond that period. Each listing contains 236,747 entries. The names listing is reproduced on fifty-three microfiche cards, and the township listing consists of seventy-three cards.Transaction Code Abbreviations and Tables
