John Black letter

This item is an affectionate letter written by John Black from [Stockton] to his wife, Catherine Black, living in Carleton Place, Upper Canada. Black expresses his sorrow at not being able to send money to his wife for such a long time. He indicates the "very hard winter" and problems at his workplace, a "shop in town" which builds wagons, as reasons for not having any money to send.

The fonds consists of three original letters. Two are written to Harriet Beaufort, the third and last one to Maria Noble. Letter #1 (November 9, 1823-December 6, 1823), tells of mail received, the death of Frances' daughter Bessie, description of produce, and of difficulties in communication with Cobourg. Letter #2 (January 27, 1824-February 5, 1824), describes Frances' troubles with servants, of Tom's trip to Cobourg over the Rice Lake/Peterborough Road, and his getting lost on the lake, and her new baby girl. Letter #3, written from Goodwood, (April 11, 1854), tells of Tom's death, and her reflections on it.

This item is a large broadside advertising the first annual Agricultural Show, in Bridgenorth, for the Smith Branch Agricultural Society on October 6, 1855. It lists exhibit and competition categories and prizes as well.

First issue of second printing. 12mo. (18 x 11 cm), pp. 24 + 1 copperplate scene of Quebec, engraved and published by Robert Weir (Glasgow). Original pink printed paper wrappers. Covers soiled, stitching is loose, spine paper is split though covers still holding, damp-staining to upper and lower edges of wraps. Scarce first issue, with the copperplate, of the second printing. First printed by the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec in 1840. Text in French. Written by a nun of the L'Hopital General, it describes events during the siege of Quebec in 1759.
