        History

The Village of Hastings was incorporated in 1875. It is on the Trent Canal system partially in Northumberland County and partially in Peterborough County. In its early history lumber from the northern part of Peterborough passed through Hastings locks on its way to Lake Ontario. It originally had a foundry, a cotton factory, flouring and grist mills as well as a stone Roman Catholic Church, the Church of England and Presbyterian and Methodist Churches.
