Bishop Edward Cridge was born at Bratton-Heming, Devonshire, England, on December 17, 1817, the son of John Cridge. He was educated at St. Peter's College, Cambridge (B.A., 1848) and was ordained a priest of the Church of England in 1849. In 1854 he married Mary Winnelle of Boniford, Essex, England, and that same year he was appointed Chaplain of the Hudson's Bay Company in Vancouver Island. He was Rector of the church at Victoria until 1874.

Cridge split away from the Church of England in 1874 and joined the Reformed Episcopal Church (of the U.S.A.). He became the Rector of Our Lord at Victoria Episcopal Church. In 1875 he was elected Bishop of the Reformed Episcopal Church and his diocese included all of Canada and the United States west of the Rocky Mountains. He administered this diocese until his death at Victoria on May 6, 1913. Bishop Cridge was the author of "As it was in the beginning" (Chicago, 1890).

Harley Richard Cummings was born in 1909 in Bond Head, Ontario, the son of Dr. James A. and Mildred Cummings. In 1933, after obtaining an Honours BA from the University of Toronto and graduating from the Ontario College of Education, he began teaching at the Boys' Vocational School and the Glashan Intermediate School and York Street School in Ottawa. In 1942, he was a volunteer education officer with the Royal Canadian Air Force and later became a flight lieutenant. At the conclusion of World War II, Cummings returned to Ottawa and, over the next twenty years, was school principal at a number of schools. Of significant importance is Cummings' book, Early Days in Haliburton, which he wrote in 1962. It includes an introduction by Ontario Premier Leslie Frost. Cummings married Shirley Stotesbury in 1964. He died at the age of 90 on May 10, 1999.

James Watson Curran, newspaper editor and author, was born in Armagh, Ireland, on April 24, 1865. When he was eight years old, his family emigrated to Canada, eventually settling in Orillia, Ontario. The Curran family was in the newspaper business and James' father owned two newspapers, the Essex Chronicle and the Orillia News-Letter (1884). James became the first news editor of the latter. In 1890, James moved to Toronto to work first as a reporter for the Toronto Empire and then as city editor. In 1895, he moved on to Montreal to become the city editor for the Montreal Herald. Six years later, while passing through Sault Ste. Marie, he became so impressed with the city that he quit his job at the Herald and bought the Sault Ste. Marie Star, which at the time was a weekly newpaper. By 1912, Curran had turned the Star into a daily paper. Curran was also a promoter of Sault Ste. Marie as an author and his two books "Here Was Vinland" (1939), and "Wolves Don't Bite" (1940), are examples of his enthusiasm for the region. He married Edith Pratt and they had a number of children including Jane W. who married Judge H. Deyman. Curran died in Sault Ste. Marie on February 20, 1952 just before his 87th birthday.

James Walter Curry was born in 1858 in Port Hope, Ontario. He was a lawyer and practiced in Port Hope, Millbrook, and Toronto. In Toronto, he headed the law firm O'Connor, Wallace and Macdonald and specialized in criminal law. Curry was also Crown Attorney (Toronto) (1892-1906), managing director of Canada-Cuba Land and Fruit Company (1906-1907), president of the Toronto Lacrosse Club, and director of the Ontario Lacrosse Club. Curry also ran unsuccessfully for MPP as the Liberal candidate for East York (1908).

Professor Anne Innis Dagg has a Ph.D. in biology and teaches at the University of Waterloo. She is author of The Feminine Gaze and MisEducation: Women & Canadian Universities.

Joseph H. Daley was a Government Immigration agent who lived in Montreal, Canada East. He had affiliations with Sir John A. Macdonald and Thomas D'Arcy McGee.

Patrick Daniel was a teacher in Ottawa, Ontario until he retired in the 1980s. At the time of his retirement, Daniel purchased a farm that had been bought by his grandmother and uncle near Campbellford, Ontario in the 1920s, and operated it until 2002. In 1979-1980 and 1984 he was a NDP candidate for Victoria Haliburton.

James Davidson was born in County Down, Ireland, in 1801, the son of Hugh Davidson. In 1823, James Davidson came to Canada with his sister. They settled first with an Uncle in Smith Township. In 1831, James settled on lot 20, concession 5, Smith Township, and established his own 200 acre farm. He married Elizabeth McConnell of Cavan Township the same year. They had four sons and four daughters: Ann, Hugh, William, Mary Jane, Sarah, James Jr., Robert, and Fanny. In 1837, Davidson fought in the Rebellion. Robert eventually went into the hardware business in Peterborough, Hugh and James Jr. went into farming, and William became a grocer and flour merchant. Blodwen Davies was born in 1897 in Longueuil, Quebec. She was educated in Montreal and she started her writing career as a reporter for the Fort William newspaper. When she heard of the Group of Seven she moved to Toronto to meet with them in 1921. She first wrote about Tom Thomson in a book called "Paddle and Pallette" published in 1930 and then wrote a second book entitled: "A Study of Tom Thomson: The Story of a Man Who Looked for Beauty and for Truth in the Wilderness" in 1935. She was a prolific writer and produced a number of works including: "Storied Streets of Quebec" in 1927; "Ruffles and Rapiers", "Daniel Du Lhut" and "Old Father Forest" all in 1930; "Storied York" in 1931; "Saguenay and Gaspe", "Romantic Quebec" and "The Charm of Ottawa" all in 1932; "Youth, Marriage and the Family", "Youth Speaks out on Citizenship" and "Youth Speaks its Mind" also all in 1948; "Gaspe: Land of History and Romance" in 1949; "Quebec: Portrait of a Province" in 1951-1952 and "Ottawa: Portrait of a Capital" in 1954. She wrote mostly histories but she also wrote a few romances. For a short time Blodwen Davies lived in the United States. In 1946 she returned to Canada and moved to Markham, Ontario. She lived in Cedar Grove, Ontario for the last fifteen years of her life. At this point in her life she was concentrating on folk history and lore of the Mennonites in Canada. Frederick Montague de la Fosse was born in England in 1859. He emigrated to Canada when he was 18 years old and worked on a farm in the Muskoka's. He built a house before 1882 and started to clear the land on which he lived. He left in 1883 for the prairies where he joined a surveying team. The story of his adventures in the west are written in "The Western Reminiscences of F.M. de la Fosse". He married Mary Jane Graham Bell in 1885 and they had four children: Margerie, Francis, Bartholomew and Philippa. Between 1885 and 1896 they lived near Lake Rousseau in Stisted Township, since de la Fosse's house had burnt down the year he had returned and before he was able to move into it. He remarried, Amy Vernon Halliday, after his first wife died. Eventually the family moved to Toronto where de la Fosse became the recording secretary of Trinity College. He published many poems in "The Trinity Review" during this time. He moved to the Peterborough area and became the copy editor of "The Peterborough Examiner" from 1907 to 1910. On December 5, 1910 F.M. de la Fosse accepted the position of Peterborough's first public librarian. In 1946 he retired from the library. Under the pen name of Roger Varden, he published "English Bloods" in 1930 which was a story of his arrival in Canada and the subsequent years. He also privately published books of his poetry: "Verses Gay and Grave" in 1937 and "A Dream and an Allegory" in 1944. He also wrote on a wide range of topics including "Centenary History of St. John's Anglican Church, 1827-1927" which was published in 1927. In 1948 he sent a poem to Princess Elizabeth (Queen Elizabeth II) for which he received an acknowledgement from her. Frederick Monatague de la Fosse died at Peterborough on September 26, 1950. Lieutenant Colonel J. Deacon was a military officer with the Midland Regiment during the Riel Rebellion in 1885. He was born in 1824 in Ireland and settled in Victoria County in 1866. He was on County Council and was Mayor of Lindsay, 1878-80 and 1886.

Paul James Delaney was born in 1944 and lived at Gore's Landing, Lakefield and Midland. He was a student at Trent University from 1964 to 1968 and is listed in the first student register. A member of Trent University’s first graduating class, Delaney became a teacher and went on to win numerous awards, including the Alumni Spirit of Trent Award, TVOntario Teacher of the Year, Pope’s Medal, YMCA Peace Medal, and the Governor General’s Award for Excellence in Teaching History. He was the first Director of Ste. Marie Among the Hurons and taught summer courses in India and Sierra Leone. “Uncle Paul”, as he became known to Trent University's international students, served as Alumnus-in-Residence at Trent, volunteered his time with the Trent International Program, and became a mentor to hundreds of Trent students. Delaney died in 2012.

Rev. Lloyd Delaney was a minister who had charge of Perrytown, Harwood and St. George's Anglican Church, Gore's Landing. He was ordained in 1941 and in addition to his historical research and writing on the Rice Lake area, he was the author of "Small but Bountiful" and also of historical sketches published in the Cobourg Sentinel-Star as "Echo From the Past." At one time he was chaplain at Lakefield College School and he retired near Midland, Ontario. He was an avid canoeist and worked with Boy Scouts teaching canoe safety.

Professor Richard Dellamora was born in 1944 in the United States. He received his education at Yale, Cambridge, and Dartmouth College. Dellamora is Professor of English and Cultural Studies at Trent University, where he also teaches in the graduate program in Culture, Theory, and Politics. He specializes in Victorian studies; history and theory of gender and sexuality; nineteenth- and twentieth-century cultural studies; critical theory; queer theory; Aestheticism and the Decadence; nineteenth-century comparative arts; and opera. He is the recipient of a number of awards and fellowships including fellowships from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Guggenheim Foundation. His publications include Masculine Desire: The Sexual Politics of Victorian Aestheticism (1990); Apocalyptic Overtures: Sexual Politics and the Sense of an Ending (1994); and three edited collections: Postmodern Apocalypse: Theory and Cultural Practice at the End (1995); The Work of Opera: Genre, Nationhood, and Sexual Difference (1997, co-editor with Daniel Fischlin); and Victorian Sexual Dissidence (1999). In 2004 he published Friendship's Bonds, a study of the attempt by Victorian writers (Eliot, Disraeli, Gladstone, Dickens, James and Trollope) to use the novel as a space in which to explore citizenship and political culture. In 2011, he published Radclyffe Hall: A Life in the Writing.

Mining in Deloro began in 1868 when gold was discovered. In 1873 Canadian Consolidated Gold Mining Company, a British-based company, began mining operations which eventually failed due to the poor recovery of gold. In 1896 Canadian Gold Fields Company bought the property and the first mill was built. The operations were successful in the beginning as new cyanide technology was used to extract the gold and roasting furnaces were built to remove the arsenic from the gold. The mill was closed in 1903 due to the poor grade of the gold.

Alfred Tennyson De Lury was born at Manilla, Canada West, on May 13, 1864 to Irish immigrant parents. He was educated at the University of Toronto where he received his B.A. (1890) and his M.A. (1902).

De Lury became a mathematics lecturer at University of Toronto in 1892, Head of the Mathematics Department in 1919, and he held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Arts from 1922 to 1935. Throughout his life he collected Irish literature and maintained associations with prominent Irish literary figures, including William Butler Yeats, Elizabeth Yeats, John Butler Yeats and other family members, George Russell, and John and Malcolm Magee. De Lury was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1918 and he was the author of several algebra and arithmetic textbooks. He died at Lindsay, Ontario on November 12, 1951. His Irish literature collection is located at the University of Toronto Library.

James Frederick Dennistoun was the eldest son of Judge Robert Dennistoun of Peterborough, Ontario. He graduated from the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1860 and became a law partner in Hudspeth and Dennistoun law firm of Lindsay in 1861. In 1868 he formed a law partnership with E.H.D. Hall of Peterborough. He was appointed to the Queen's Council in 1876, was a member of Peterborough Town Council, and sat on a local school board. He was married to Kate Kirkpatrick.

The Denoon family arrived in Peterborough between 1871 and 1883. In 1883 William Denoon lived north of Hunter and west of George, pt 7 as a tenant. In 1887 William was working with livestock presumably in the butchering business since by 1890 he is a butcher. He died in Ashburnham 30 May 1891 of consumption at the age of 39. By 1896 Mrs. William and John Denoon were running the butcher business. The Denoons were butchers for approximately 23 years (1887-1910). By 1926 Elizabeth Denoon (widow of William) lived with Kenneth M. Denoon. Kenneth was a gardener and was a home owner on the north side of Lansdowne Street. By 1936 and 1937 only Kenneth M. Denoon can be found living in Peterborough with his wife Lola Y. and still living on the north side of Lansdowne Street. In 1937 Kenneth is a farmer. Presumably John and Kenneth M. Denoon were children of William and Elizabeth Denoon. (This information is found in the Peterborough County Directories located in the Trent University Archives.)

The Department of Labour came into existence with the passing of the Conciliation Act of 1900. The original objectives of the Department were the preparation and publication of the "Labour Gazette"; settlement of industrial disputes under the terms of the Conciliation Act; promotion of fair wage payment and proper conditions; and administration of the Alien Labour Acts. Initially, the administration of the Department was the responsibility of the Postmaster General, until 1909, when the Office of the Minister of Labour was established under a separate Cabinet portfolio. Additional responsibilities have been added to the Department over the years. It was involved in the creation of a system of national employment offices after 1918; and after 1926, in the implementation of Canada's first old age pension plan. In 1940, the Department began to administer unemployment insurance. After 1945, it became increasingly involved in the creation, planning, and administration of the Canada Labour Code. The Department of Railways and Canals was created in 1879 by extracting from the Department of Public Works its Railway Branch and the operational responsibilities for canals administered by the Office of the Chief Engineer, and combining them to form a new ministry composed of the two branches (the Railway Branch and the Canal Branch). The Railway Branch was responsible for the construction, operation, and maintenance of government-owned railways, and administered a program of financial assistance designed to encourage railway companies to construct new lines. The Canal Branch supervised the operation, maintenance, and enlargement of the Canadian Canal System and undertook the construction of new canals when required. In 1936, the Department of Railways and Canals was amalgamated with the Department of Marine and the Civil Aviation Branch of the Department of National Defence to form the Department of Transport. Jane W. Deyman (nee Curran) was born November 7, 1914 to James W. Curran (see 74-006) and Edith Pratt. She married Harry R. Deyman (1912-1975) and they had three children: Mary, Susan and Peter. Her husband was a supreme court judge for Cobourg and then Peterborough. Jane was the chair of the Board of Directors at the Peterborough Centennial Museum and Archives as well as chair for the Peterborough Historical Atlas Foundation. She was a long time member of the Peterborough Historical Society and volunteered at Hutchinson House. She was an active participant in heritage and humane fields and volunteered her time to numerous heritage activities. Jane Deyman died January 27, 1993.

Samuel Dickson was born in 1809 in County Cavan, Ireland. He emigrated from Ireland to Peterborough in 1830 and became employed by James Hall as a distiller. In 1840 he built a saw mill on the Otonabee and owned all the land from Parkhill (Smith Rd.) to the bridge on Hunter Street on both sides of the river. He married Ann Holmes and they had ten children: one son and nine daughters of whom only six daughters survived. Samuel Dickson was on the Peterborough Council for four years. He built a number of houses and owned a large portion of Peterborough property. He died in 1870 when, while supervising the repair of a railway pier, he fell into the river and drowned. His daughters married and they and their husbands helped to run the lumber business. His eldest daughter, Mary Ann, married T.A. Hazlitt, who on the death of Samuel Dickson became the manager of the lumber business. Elizabeth married William Davidson and through her line the family maintained the lumber business. In 1906 the Dickson family sold some of their property and established the Peterborough Lumber Company which would give jobs to some of the older men from the Dickson Co. Samuel's grandson Dickson Davidson was the President of the new company. When he died Laura Davidson became President. At her death in 1957, Helen Munroe McCrae, became the President. She was a great granddaughter of Samuel Dickson.
