Octavo. Title continues: Homesteads; to Mining and to the Preservation of Forests from Destruction by Fire. (24.5 cm x 16.5 cm), pp. iv, 52 + 4 inserted plates, large folding two-colour frontispiece map (appears to have been tipped-in upside down). Original salmon-coloured printed paper wraps, title-page reproduced in frame to front cover, stapled binding. Covers lightly soiled, piece missing from upper outer corner affecting the word "District" in title, a few short closed tears to bottom edge, else very good, clean copy. Includes the 1885 Act forming the District of Rainy River, the 1890 Free Grant and Homestead Act, Forms and Affidavits referred to in the Acts, and the Act to Preserve the Forests from Destruction by Fire. This fonds consists of research materials collected by Professor Ross Irwin for his book on Mariposa Township, Victoria County. Material added August 1992 includes a copy of Mariposa: The Banner Township and a series of 8 scrapbooks created by Mrs. Alex McIntyre of Oakwood, Ontario and donated via Professor Irwin. Additions of 1994 include slides of Lindsay, Ontario and other scenes in Victoria County taken in approximately the 1960s. Additions of 2002 include 2 notebooks of Robert Irwin, Cambray. Additions of 2010 include studio portraits of ancestral family members. Additions of 2012 include items related to the history of the Wakelin family and a scribbler with house-building notes.

The grasses scrapbook was compiled by Catharine Parr Traill for her friend James Fletcher and given to him 12 January 1894. The inside cover has the following inscriptions: "Grasses from Stony Lake gathered and mounted by Cathe Parr Traill - Aged 92 years." These specimens are from the Island of Minne Wa-Wa and Otter Island. July-September 1893" and "With Mrs.Traill's kind wishes to her much valued and esteemed friend James Fletcher F.S.L.S. & etc. January 12th, 1894". The scrapbook consists of 20 pages, 18 of which have pressed grasses, from the Stoney Lake area of the Island of Minne Wa-Wa and Otter Island, glued onto them. Also included in the scrapbook is a specimen list of the grasses and a photocopy of an article, entitled "Grasses from Stony Lake Gathered and Mounted by Cathe Parr Traill - Aged 92 Years". The article was written by William G. Dore and published in The Ontario Naturalist in 1966.

The framed mosses were gathered by Catharine Parr Traill in the Stoney Lake area. Prior to the Archives receiving this addition, the pages were taken apart, mounted and framed in two frames each containing three pages of mosses; one medium frame containing "Sedges & grass, with mosses, from the bank below the garden at Westove. Gathered and arranged for Katie. With Grandmother's dear love. Oct. 24th, 1889"; and one small frame with Traill's autograph.

Covers tanned primarily to margins, tail of spine chipped with small split, 3 minor nicks, 2 short closed tears to lower edge of rear cover, staples starting to oxidize, else a very good, tight, clean copy. Interesting chapter on "Lands in Algoma--Where and How to Obtain Them.--Ontario Free Grant and Twenty Cents an Acre Lands and Dominion Indian (Surrendered) Lands." [2228]

File includes a broadside advertising the auction sale of Northcote Farm on Lake Katchewanooka, property of Dr. Campbell Mellis Douglas. Most of Northcote Farm became part of Lakefield College School in 2007; a small part of Northcote is retained by the Gastle family. Also included are two small hand-drawn maps by George Douglas of Northcoate Farm, ca. 1909.

The fonds consists of photocopies and typescripts of correspondence and journals of Reverend Robert Brooking and his wife Elizabeth relating to his service as a missionary in Africa, in Canada West and in the Hudson's Bay Territory. Also included are reports of the Wesleyan Missionary Society, 1851-1857. Some of the items relate to the Hiawatha and Rama Reserves, and Norway House. The original records date from 1839 to 1879. Also included is a modern print of a photograph of Rev Robert Brooking [ca. 1890] and 3 photographs of Elizabeth's tombstone at Chief Island, Lake Couchiching, Rama Reserve, near Orillia.
