This collection is comprised of disparate documents collected by Professor David Macmillan. The scope of the papers is primarily North America, 1680 to 1920.

Carley, DavidCollection consists of correspondence, 1882-1899, and several envelopes dating 1870s to 1890s, most of which are addressed to Thomas Choate of Warsaw, and Mrs. John Moore [Cettie Choate, daughter of Thomas]; souvenir brochure of pictures of Peterborough, Ontario; Maccabees brochures; approximately 125 stereographs depicting scenery, architecture, and people in the U.S.A., Europe, and Canada; two photographs of the employees of Western Clock Company Limited of Peterborough, Ontario, 1938 and 1944; a temperance meeting poster for Warsaw, Ontario, 1858; and an electoral district of East Durham proclamation broadside, 1924. Also included is the Choate Family Bible donated and added to the collection in 2002. The bible contains genealogical information on the Choate family.

Some of the correspondence and other documents pertain to the Mulholland Family (1961-1965).

Newcastle DistrictThis fonds consists of a "School Exercise Book" which contains a handwritten biographical sketch of Miss Burgess' "First School", undoubtedly written to be read to the members of the Shakespeare Club at one of their monthly meetings. The 31 loose sheets consist of poems and verse written by Burgess over the years as inspiration or occasion presented.
Burgess, VernaThis fonds consists of three issues of the University of Manitoba publication VOX which contain stories, poetry, editorials, reports and a graduate section which has photographs of the graduates for the year of publication. In all issues there are short stories and poetry written by Margaret Laurence, under her maiden name of Jean Margaret (Peggy) Wemyss. There is also a photograph of her in one of the issues.

Howland, William P.This item is a minute book of the Agricultural Society of the Township of Smith. This item includes minutes of meetings from January 1855 to October 1904; lists of officers; lists of successful competitors at agricultural shows; and broadsides advertising agricultural shows. The book contains (pasted to the inside back cover) a letter dated May 11, 1887 from A. Blue of the Ontario Department of Agriculture who acknowledges that the Smith, Ennismore and Lakefield Agricultural Society has been duly recognized and incorporated. Reference is made to a certificate from the West Peterborough Electoral District [Agricultural] Society recognizing the Smith Township society.
