This addition to the fonds consists of correspondence of Frances Stewart and her mother's family (the Wallers). Some letters relate to her upbringing in Ireland. The remaining correspondence concerns her life in Douro Township as one of the first pioneers. Frances describes pioneer life and its attendant hardships, the settlement and development of the Peterborough area and Douro Township and social, family, religious and economic life in early Ontario. Some correspondence concerns the publication of 'Our Forest Home'.

A highly decorative piece consisting of a circular map 17 in. in diameter of the Arctic set within a rectangle 19 x 17 in. with its remaining portions filled with remarkable coloured vignettes of whaling scenes in the northern regions. The Arctic is shown in its standard form for this period ... with Northwest America absent due to lack of available knowledge.

Part of Edwin C. Guillet fonds

The Guillet papers are extraordinarily rich in photographs. Guillet (1898-1975) was born at Cobourg, Ontario and educated at the University of Toronto. He was the author of many books including Valley of the Trent, published in 1957. During the course of his research, Guillet collected photographs of local settlers and scenes, a few of which are reproduced here.
