Norman R. McBain manuscript

This 73-page typewritten manuscript is an anecdotal record of the information McBain amassed about the properties in northeast Cavan Township. It includes a record of the hamlet of Springville west of the Cavan-Monaghan boundary and of Fairmount (formerly Morrow), a crossroads on the 12th Line, and references to Ida and Mount Pleasant on the middle road. There are in-depth references to properties and families on the 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th lines east of the middle road to the Monaghan boundary.

This collection consists of a number of articles written by Norman McBain about families in Cavan and about topics of interest in the Cavan area, i.e. inns, taxes, schools, etc. It also includes the following: an article by E.S. Clarry on an 1821 petition to the King regarding voting rights; a bylaw re taverns; the history of Fairmount Church and Methodist givings; an 1896 ballot for Cavan officers; a clipping re George Berry; a list of Overseers of Highways, fence viewers, etc.; an audited financial statement of Cavan for 1875; a newspaper report of Cavan Council business; an invoice re sidewalks; notes on Cavan town hall; and several pages of original hand-written notes re persons holding various offices in Cavan. Also included are copies of clippings re Cavan Blazers, school graduation results, etc.

Fonds consists of one ledger identified as having belonged to Moscrip, Allan & Company. The business sold hardware, machinery, and farm equipment, and repaired same. Some customers were contractors, blacksmiths, wagoners; addresses of customers were Hamilton Township, Cobourg, Oshawa, Peterborough, Port Hope, and Bowmanville. Some business was carried on with schooners. Other customers included Dr. Gilchrist; Thomas Trail [Traill]; Cobourg-Peterborough Distillery; Ontario Distillery; Cobourg, Peterborough & Marmora Railway and Mining Co.; R.A. Waddell, Sheriff; and merchants and farmers. Accounts for 1867 listed Trustees of Common Schools with charges for two school bells. The ledger includes an index.

The fonds consists of the typescript memoirs of Minnie E. McHolm of her life in Frome, Somerset, England, to March 1913, then the memoirs of life as a domestic on the Canadian prairies, outside of Regina, to December 1920. The fonds also includes two booklets of Mrs. McHolm's poetry, The Indiscretion of Mary Jane and Sunset at Golden Hill. Additional material received in 2003 includes another book of poetry, Singing With a Swing, and newspaper clippings regarding Minnie McHolm. Also included are 2 Christmas cards featuring McHolm poems signed by Minnie McHolm and a newspaper obituary.

This fonds consists primarily of the correspondence of Scott Ackerman Medd to his parents Sidney Taylor Medd and Estelle Lumsden Ackerman and his sister Mary E. Medd. The correspondence covers such topics as Scott's education at Trinity College School in Port Hope and at the Royal Academy in London, England, his development as and artist, life in England, and World War II. The fonds also contains the family records of Thomas and Mary Medd consisting of emigration and settlement letters, 1819-1919; correspondence to Robert Medd, 1820-1852; and correspondence to and from Sidney Taylor Medd during World War I. Also included are photographs of various members of the Medd family and sketches and sketchbooks of Scott Ackerman Medd.

Lewis, and research material pertaining to Irish immigrant Frances Stewart and to the nineteenth-century social history of Ontario. The home, which has since been demolished, was close to Fenelon Falls on Sturgeon Lake. The people in the photographs are not identified. Written on an envelope, included with the photographs, is "1911 & 1912. Old photos of "Blyth" Given to M. McCulloch by Mrs. [Frances] George Douglas."

This item is an affectionate letter written by John Black from [Stockton] to his wife, Catherine Black, living in Carleton Place, Upper Canada. Black expresses his sorrow at not being able to send money to his wife for such a long time. He indicates the "very hard winter" and problems at his workplace, a "shop in town" which builds wagons, as reasons for not having any money to send.

Collection consists of a guide to nearly all of the Frances Stewart letters located at Trent University Archives and elsewhere. The guide is a biographical reference tool which indexes all the names which appear in the letters. The indexing locates each name in the approximately 450 letters and gives the corresponding page number in the transcripts (94-006); it provides the source of biographic information, and explains the relationship of each person to Thomas Alexander Stewart and Frances Browne Stewart. The guide is arranged alphabetically by last name and includes hundreds of names, i.e., Sydney Bellingham, Rev. George Brabazon, Rev. Francis Browne, John Burnham, Rev. Mark Burnham, Zaccheus Burnham, Frances Anne Edgeworth, Agnes Fitzgibbon (nee Moodie), Catherine Elizabeth Kirkpatrick (nee Browne), Susanna Moodie (nee Strickland), Robert Reid, Peter Robinson, Captain Charles Rubidge, Frances Stewart (nee Browne), Thomas Alexander Stewart, Samuel Strickland, Catharine Parr Traill (nee Strickland), and Robert Waller (complete list of names attached below). It was written by the employees of the company who welcome Dennistoun back after a period away due to illness. This fonds consists of letters from a servant girl, Isabella Brownlie in Otonabee to her brother Claud in Scotland. After 1845, the letters are from Isabella and her husband James Miller. The fonds also contains two photographs, one of Isabella's brother, Claud Brownlie, with his wife, Elizabeth [Kendrick], and the second of Claud Brownlie alone, as well as a diploma for Thomas Menzies Miller, 1891.

This item is a photocopy of a letter written by Isabella Carr to her sister, Mrs. Richard Bond of Lockport, New York. The letter was written in February, 1846. The letter gives news of family and neighbours and tells of an outbreak of measles.
